February 1st marked the beginning of Black History Month also known as African American History Month, during which we celebrate the achievements of African Americans.  It is a time to recognize their pivotal role in the history of this nation and reflect how and why this celebration became a tradition.

Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of Black History, established the first Black History week in 1926, with the intention to bring public attention to important issues that affect the African American community and the achievements of African Americans.” He established the Association for the Study of African American and History and dedicated his life to the study and celebration of African American history.

The first month-long celebration (January 2nd – February 2nd) was held at Kent State University in 1970.  Six years later, President Gerald Ford, during the United States Bicentennial, recognized Black History Month, during a speech in which he urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history”.  Since 1976, every president officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. The month of February also coincides with two important birthdays of two men who were instrumental in our nation’s black history:  Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.  Other Countries such as Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History theme for 2022 focuses on the importance of Black health and wellness.  Please take some time to reflect on your health and wellness, but also on the health and wellness of your community at large. Your VAGP community supports and celebrates you!
